Inspiring the Next Generation: Swanlea School’s Year 5 Day

Swanlea School was delighted to welcome Year 5 pupils from a number of our partner primary schools for an exciting and engaging Year 5 Day, designed to introduce students to the opportunities and experiences available in secondary education.

Throughout the day, pupils took part in a wide variety of interactive lessons across different subject areas, giving them the chance to explore new skills while building confidence in a welcoming environment.

The day began with an Oracy session, where students developed their communication skills through activities focused on speaking clearly, confidently and making effective eye contact.

In Science, students enjoyed a truly hands-on experience by dissecting sheep hearts to explore anatomy and investigating owl pellets to learn more about food chains, habitats and animal diets. These practical activities encouraged curiosity and brought classroom learning to life.

Mathematics took on a detective theme, with pupils working collaboratively to solve a fictional murder mystery using mathematical reasoning. By applying their knowledge of angles, shapes, compass directions and coordinates, students demonstrated excellent problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Creativity continued in the Music department, where pupils took part in vocal warm-ups and began learning a song that they will perform in the future, helping to build both musical ability and confidence.

Students also experienced a taster lesson in French, learning everyday vocabulary and greetings while discovering the benefits of speaking another language and understanding different cultures.

In Design & Technology, pupils created reusable tote bags using a range of materials, developing practical design skills while learning about sustainability, textiles and creative thinking.

Alongside these featured activities, students also had opportunities to experience subjects including History, English, German and more, offering a broad insight into life at Swanlea School.

Year 5 Day is an important part of helping young learners feel excited and confident about the transition to secondary school. Through engaging lessons, practical experiences and opportunities to meet staff and students, pupils gained a valuable insight into the vibrant learning community at Swanlea.

We extend our sincere thanks to all of our partner primary schools for attending and making the day such a success. It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm, curiosity and teamwork throughout the event, and we look forward to welcoming our future students back to Swanlea again soon.
