6th Form Support & Guidance

We are dedicated to supporting the success of our students at every stage of their post 16 academic journey. The guidance we provide extends from academic mentoring and careers advice, to extra curricular programmes such as university visits and community volunteering.

The sixth formers at Swanlea School have access to a dedicated team of experienced mentors and careers advisors to help with the transition from GCSE to A Level study and prepare them for life after Swanlea. Our academic mentors are subject specialists and work with students on challenging areas of the curriculum, revision and exam techniques. As well as this, the students have access to a 6th Form independent learning centre (ILC) and are timetabled for supervised study sessions with our general mentors. These sessions provide an excellent opportunity for the students to study independently or in small groups and they are able to gain feedback on their literacy and essay writing skills.

We place great emphasis on the importance of tutor groups in the 6th Form. For all students this is an excellent way of making friends and feeling supported throughout the transition from lower school. It is an open forum in which students are encouraged to discuss current affairs and there is a PD programme designed to target relevant issues for young people at the moment. We strive to ensure that students feel confident and comfortable throughout their A Level studies, and tutor time is vital in achieving this.

We are firm believers that our students should be confident, responsible citizens and we seek to develop their social and emotional intelligence as well as their academic capabilities. The PD programme at Swanlea 6th Form encourages our young people to consider issues and events that are directly relevant to them in an open minded and insightful way. From the responsible use of technology to wider cultural debates, these sessions are a great opportunity for our students to consider their role within society and develop the skills to thrive in the wider world beyond the 6th Form.

At Swanlea School sixth form all our students are provided with a rich variety of extra-curricular programmes and opportunities. We have excellent links with corporate partners, local businesses and universities. Students have the chance to sign up for business mentors, work placements, university summer schools and subject-specific taster programmes. These activities are designed to help students to gain experience, while developing new skills and building their confidence for the future. Students are also encouraged to play a positive role in the local community through our sixth form volunteering programme, by supporting local charities and projects such as the local food bank.
